The role Surinamese natives played in the Netherlands during the war has not been widely told, even though they resisted against the same enemy. Urban Myth Theatre Group believes it is important that this piece of underexposed history is told and presents Kid Dynamite at Stadsschouwburg Utrecht on Saturday, June 22nd. A TEDx-style evening featuring opposition and cultural identity, these inspiring short lectures with among others Denise Jannah, Manoushka Zeegelaar Breeveld and Raymi Sambo are interspersed with theater and live music.
Significant role
The Surinamese born Louis Arthur Parisius, a.k.a as Kid Dynamite, is one of the founders of the Dutch jazz scene. Kid Dynamite mixed Surinamese music with American jazz influences, whereas his colleague Max Woiski, also Surinamese with a lighter skin tone, gave preference to commercial work. The conflict with Woiski forms the dramaturgical line of production, addressing intriguing questions from different angles on cultural identity.
Urban Myth editor Noraly Beyer explains: “I believe it is very important that these stories are told, considering these also pertain to the society we live in".
